Group Wha: Designing and fact finding about our favourite numbers

Testing conjectures: Group Rua

Courtney: "Put the buttons diagonally and the buttons will always win."

First I tried it by only putting the buttons diagonally and now I'm trying to put it in other places to see if it still works.

Group Tahi: Testing our Conjectures

Today we tested if our Conjectures (guesses) were correct or not?:

Tayla:  "I think the buttons will win if they are only in a straight line with two spaces in between.  If they are diagonal it does not work."

Will:  "Put the buttons in a straight line and then the paper clips can cover all squares.  If there are two blocks between the buttons or no blocks between the buttons it can also win. If the buttons are diagonal the paper clips can't win."

Olivia: "I think my conjecture was right because the paper clips got nine right when the buttons are apart in opposite corners." Today I also know if they are right beside each other it can also work as long as it is not diagonal."

Amelia:  If the buttons are diagonally apart and far away or close to each other the buttons win."

Caprice " My conjecture was putting the buttons diagonally the buttons will always win, it doesn't matter if they are far or close together."

Making Conjectures: it's all about the buttons and paper clips.

Today we talked about what a conjecture is:
Our shared understanding is that it is "an idea we have that we want to test." As Blake said it is like a hypothesis in science.

We have made a few conjectures and look forward to testing them during our warm ups this week.

Can you think of any??

The Maths window attracts lots of visitors- thank you for my helpers adding some new posters.

Welcome Back: Group Toru please complete before next Monday:

After watching this video again please add to this list:

  • They put donuts in a boiler and mechanically they turn them
  • They don’t make it with hands just a machine
  • Make the icing and drop down onto the donuts and it doesn’t stop. Lots of waste of icing
  • What happens to the extra icing? Does it go back to the top?
  • How do they make the machine?
  • How do they make the donuts exactly the same length?
  • Can it run without power?
  • How many donuts sit in one box?

3 Act Maths

Today we used you tube to inspire our Mathematical Thinking.  This catered for different needs and learning styles.  Here the Maths alongside the creativity was rewarded.

Our 3 Act Maths Explanation

Monday 8 April 2019

Today we used our problem to learn how to split numbers.

Number muscle: using 3 digits - every member has a job

Our burning question: how many days until Easter?

We can see this as an addition and a subtraction question.  Some of us used an empty numberline, some of us used materials and others used information they already knew.

We all agreed there are 11 days until Easter 🐣

Thank you Tayla for your numberline:
